🍳 It’s ‘okonomiyake’ which I tried for the first time in a Madrid diner, a Japanese pancake with ginger, cabbage, nori & far too much mayonnaise. As a dish for one, it was far too heavy and nobody would share it with me but a small amount would have been nice. And maybe not as one’s first meal of the day.⁣

🎤James felt like the soundtrack to my angsty teenage self. Their ‘Born of Frustration’ featured on my ‘Now 21’ double cassette- one of my first musical purchases after my Kylie Minogue obsession started to wane. ⁣

😩 Working as a very glamorous sales assistant in Etams & Tammy Girl on Bangor’s Main Street in 1996 I used to rejoice when ‘She’s a Star’ came on the shop’s playlist, providing much needed relief from the other God-awful tracks. ⭐ ⁣

🌸 When it came to my year abroad in 1999, I packed their ‘Best Of’ album which I’d bought in Woolworths, & it kept me company in my dismal little room where I stayed for 3 weeks before finding a flat with the other language assistants. I was 20, I didn’t know anyone and was over 6000 miles from home. The room was part of the school’s boarding section. There were HUGE cockroaches & it had a particular clinical odour. But I recall listening to ‘Sound’ and then, stepping out and looking at the mountains in the distance & heading down to the beautiful beach on the Indian Ocean. 🌊The lyrics, ‘Laugh at the wonder of it all’ played over and over in my head. I went on to meet lifelong friends and the wonder of that experience has never left me. ⁣

😄If, like me, you struggle to find practical but not visually repellent sandals, these could be your find of the summer. Not a blister have I suffered, while exploring Alicante and Madrid before heading on to Barcelona. ⁣

🍄My only mishap so far occurred when doing hopscotch on #mushroomstreet in Alicante when I almost tripped up. However, the fault there lies in a 47-year-old getting up to such antics and not with the footwear. ⁣

☀️July’s here (despite the ☔️yesterday) & I intend to read, read, read. Just finished ‘Longbourn’ by Jo Baker, having read ‘The Midnight News’ earlier in the year. Both were marvellous. The new Elizabeth Strout awaits. I’m almost afraid to start it, as I tend to read quickly & then I won’t have it to look forward to anymore. 😢☹️⛱️When I go away I like to rummage about the hotel book swaps. In Croatia I picked up ‘confessions of a 40 year old f##k’ by Alexandra Potter. It was great fun and always nice to have a light read for the beach. 🏖️’Land’ by Maggie O’Farrell also on the list, as is Wendy Erskine’s ‘The Benefactors.’ What is everyone else reading these holidays??
